Here's a brief description of the main residency permits: Employment Visa, Investment Visa, Golden Visa and Student Visa.
- Characteristics & Requirements: The Employment Visa is for individuals who have secured employment in the UAE. To obtain this visa, you must have a valid employment contract and sponsorship from your employer. The process involves passing a medical test and obtaining a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
- Duration: Typically issued for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal.
- Family Extension: Sponsors can extend their visa to include family members, provided they meet the minimum salary requirements set by the UAE government.
- Characteristics & Requirements: Aimed at entrepreneurs and investors, this visa requires a substantial financial investment in the UAE. The investment can be in real estate, a business or a deposit in a UAE bank. The specific amount varies, but a significant commitment is required to qualify (i.e. for real estate investments, there is a minimum investment threshold of AED 750,000).
- Duration: Issued for 2 years, renewable as long as the investment criteria continue to be met.
- Family Extension: Investors can sponsor their family members, including spouses and children, under this visa, ensuring that families can stay together.
- Characteristics & Requirements: The Golden Visa is reserved for individuals with outstanding skills or significant investments in key sectors such as real estate, large scale investments or special talents in areas such as sports, arts and sciences. Requirements vary depending on the category, but generally include proof of investment (i.e. investment in real estate, which typically includes ownership of a property with a value of at least AED 2 million, including off-plan properties) or exceptional talent.
- Duration: Offers a long-term residency option, with visas valid for 10 years, renewable.
- Family Extension: Allows holders to sponsor their family members, including spouses, children and even parents under certain conditions.
- Characteristics & Requirements: For students enrolled in full-time programmes at universities or educational institutions in the UAE. Applicants must provide proof of admission and sponsorship from the educational institution.
- Duration: Generally valid for the duration of the study programme, usually up to 5 years, with renewal options based on continued enrolment.
- Family Extension: Student visas do not normally allow direct family sponsorship. However, students whose parents or spouses hold valid UAE residency visas may reside in the UAE as dependents.
